How Garrett Grayson became Broncos’ newest quarterback

Garrett Grayson walked through the front door of his home in Nashville on Wednesday, just returned from a day of meetings for his budding real estate company, when the phone rang with an opportunity for a career detour.

Grayson, the former Colorado State quarterback (2011-14) who earned totals of 9,190 passing yards and 64 touchdowns, traded his business attire for a Denver Broncos uniform after the team cut backup quarterback Chad Kelly and promoted wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie to the active roster.

Grayson, previously under contract with the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football league, happily filled Denver’s open practice squad slot.

“My agent was calling, my dad was calling, everybody,” Grayson said. “I was obviously very excited and happy to get the opportunity.”

The Saints selected Grayson in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft and he spent two seasons on New Orleans’ active roster but did not appear in a regular-season game and Grayson was eventually cut. He landed on the Falcons’ practice squad mid-season last year and competed in training camp this fall before being waived again. Grayson lived in Nashville with a former CSU teammate, wide receiver Thomas Coffman, and did his best to stay in football shape.

“We threw as much as we could,” Grayson said, “studied film as much as we could and tried to relive the glory days, I guess, if you want to say that.”

“He’s a guy that we’ve been tracking here for a couple years,” coach Vance Joseph said. “He fits the skill-set that our quarterbacks have. He can move, he has a good arm and he’s a very smart guy.”

Grayson is embracing the opportunity.

“I think having been behind two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks (Drew Brees in New Orleans and Matt Ryan in Atlanta), I think that helps me in the long run,” Grayson said. “Just seeing how they prepare, how they go about their daily business and just being a true pro. I think that helped me a ton and it’s something, I’m sure, I don’t even realize how much I learned from that. I’m very grateful for that and hopefully it shows while I’m here.”
