Clinton McDonald will be ‘a great player’ for Broncos

When the Broncos signed Clinton McDonald to a two-year, $7 million contract this offseason, most fans in Denver probably thought it was a minor signing. Defensive end Derek Wolfe doesn’t see it that way.

“He’s a great player,” Wolfe said after practice Sunday. “Not only leadership, but he’s got that quick twitch. He’s strong. He’s strong as an ox. We trained all offseason together. Normally I don’t see a lot of guys where I’m like ‘Wow,’ that give you that ‘Wow,’ but he’s really strong.

“It’s impressive how strong he is. I think he’s going to give us a lot more depth. It’s almost like [former defensive end] Antonio Smith. You wouldn’t think he’s in year 10 the way he moves. You really wouldn’t. You’d think he was a five or six-year guy.”

McDonald is actually entering his ninth season, but the point still stands. He’s surprisingly agile for a 31-year-old defensive lineman and still productive.

McDonald recorded five sacks as a rotational defender with the Buccaneers last season — the Broncos would probably be thrilled to get similar production from him this year.

McDonald will likely serve as a rotational defender on Denver’s defensive line this season behind starting nose tackle Domata Peko.
