QUICK HIT

Academics First - When the 49ers drafted Manny, they received a player that not only had ideal physical attributes, but one who also possessed an impressive mental capacity. Manny, whose father was in the Air Force and mother was a residential nurse, was taught the values of discipline at an early age. Academics always came first and athletics were just for fun. Anything below a B+ was not satisfactory to his parents. Fast forward a few years and the early lessons paid off as Manny graduated with a degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina State. He then went on to score a 43 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test, which was tied for the highest of his draft class.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

2009 (49ERS)•Led the team with a career-high 6.5 sacks and tied the franchise record for most FFs by a 49ers linebacker in a single season (4).

Lawson Makes All-Around Gains

SANTA CLARA -- Manny Lawson, who is entering the final year of his contract with the 49ers, remained away from the team's offseason program. When he reappeared for the mandatory minicamp, it was immediately obvious he hadn't been just sitting around snacking on cannoli. Lawson made good use of his time away from the 49ers' training complex to get ready ...

Lawson pushing 49ers for new contract

SANTA CLARA – Linebacker Manny Lawson said Thursday he wants to be a 49er for the long haul. Lawson had been working out on his own in Arizona but was in Santa Clara for the start of the team's mandatory minicamp, which runs through ...

More than once Tuesday, linebacker Manny Lawson leaped up to swat away a pass. Getting a throw over Lawson's hands takes some doing. For one thing, he's a former high school long jumper and triple-jumper. For another, he is 6-foot-5 with freakishly long arms. "Like Wilt Chamberlain,'' defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said. Knocking down passes is fine, ...

49ERS BEAT 6/8/2009
49ERS BEAT

When the 49ers finished the 2008 season with a defense ranked 13th in the NFL, it represented a significant improvement from earlier in the year, as former coach Mike Nolan shuttled in players constantly and flip-flopped from a 3-4 front to a 4-3. In replacing the fired Nolan just before midseason, Mike Singletary simplified the defensive approach and ...

49ers notes: Big things expected from Lawson

The 49ers did not pick up a pass rusher in last month's draft, but defensive coordinator Greg Manusky insists his unit will have enough firepower this year. "I think we have a couple of guys on the team that are playing well and doing that," Manusky said Saturday. Those two guys are outside linebackers Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson, both of whom ...
